Weapons Lessons

Sanshinkai Aikido Utrecht also offers weapons lessons. In contrast to the indoor aikido lessons, these take place in quiet green outdoor locations. During these lessons different long and short kata are being practised, which will be discussed below.

Part of the origin of aikido are different forms of kendo, Japanese forms of sword fighting. To be able to practise aikido principles with a sword, parts of these different martial arts have been borrowed and adapted minimally. This collection of kata is called aikiken and is an essential part of aikido.

Also jodo, Japanes stick fighting, is part of the foundation of aikido. Contrary to a sword, the stick that is being used is made of wood and identical on both sides. This characteristic is clearly recognisable in the round forms of aikijo kata.

Unique to Sanshinkai Aikido is the practise of the hojo kata which is part of Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ryū. This Japanese martial art with sword is over five hundred years old which can be described as meditation swordfighting consisting of action but also slow movements.

Impression of to no kata

The hojo kata is very suitable as a starting point for developing van houding, focus, balans, ademhaling, timing en afstand.
